Co-ordinate Line

A Straight Line with a defined coordinate system is called a Coordinate Line.

Naming the Co-ordinate line

The coordinate lines are identified using lower case letters of the English alphabets. The same letter is used twice once with a single quote (‘) over it. x’ x indicates a coordinate line with x’ representing the negative side and x representing the positive side of the coordinate line.

It is a general convention that we represent

  • Horizontal Axis [x-axis]
the horizontal axis as the x-axis.

It is a coordinate line placed “Horizontal” as x’x (Or) x’ox by placing the symbol for the origin in between. This indicates that the negative numbers are to the left and the positive numbers are to the right of the origin.
    • Positive x-axis [Ox]
The ray containing the origin and all the positive points on the horizontal coordinate line form the positive x-axis.
      (Or)
The horizontal axis from the origin to the right is called the positive x-axis.
      It is represented as ox
    • Negative x-axis [ox']
The ray containing the origin and all the negative points on the horizontal coordinate line form the negative x-axis.
      (Or)
The horizontal axis from the origin to the left is called the negatvie x-axis.
      It is represented as ox'
  • Vertical Axis [y-axis]
the vertical axis as the y-axis.

It is a coordinate line placed “Vertical” as yy’ (Or) yoy’ by placing the symbol for the origin in between. This indicates that the positive numbers are to the top and the negative numbers are to the bottom of the origin.
    • Positive y-axis [oy]
The ray containing the origin and all the positive points on the vertical coordinate line form the positive y-axis.
      (Or)
The vertical axis from the origin towards the upward direction is called the positive y-axis.
      It is represented as oy
    • Negative y-axis
The ray containing the origin and all the negative points on the vertical coordinate line form the negative y-axis.
      (Or)
The vertical axis from the origin towards the downward direction is called the negative y-axis.
      It is represented as oy'
  • Oblique Axis
It is a coordinate line placed in a position and direction other than "Horizontal" and “Vertical”.

Generally we come across and use the "Horizontal" and "Vertical" axes in our study of this topic.
